Illinois Driver's License ID Renewal and Replacement

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office will mail you a renewal letter 60 to 90 days prior to the expiration date listed on your driver’s license or identification (ID) card. It will be mailed to the address on record, so if you’ve moved and have not updated your address, you may not receive the letter. There are a variety of fee types when you renew or replace a license or ID card. You might also be required to take a test, depending on the type of license. Once you renew a license it will be mailed to you within 15 business days.

You can generally renew an Illinois license or ID online or in person.

Online renewal

If you have kept a clean driving record for the past four years, you should qualify for the safe driver renewal process. This means you haven’t had any traffic violations such as speeding or running a red light and you haven’t caused accidents. If your renewal letter says you’re a safe driver, you should have the option to renew online. You will need:
